internship

The Philadelphia Historical Commission recognizes that the histories represented on its local historic register aren’t a full representation of its people. The Commission accepts nominations from the public but is looking to build capacity to generate its own nominations that are better reflective of the community. The Commission is looking for remote paid interns whose research and writing abilities can help us tell more untold histories.

The Philadelphia Historical Commission is seeking one or more part-time, remote work, paid historic preservation interns for the spring 2022 semester. Primary tasks will involve surveying for, preparing, and reviewing nominations proposing the designations of historic sites and districts to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places. Emphasis will be placed on sites related to the histories of marginalized and underserved populations such as Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ communities. Primary responsibilities include historical research online and at repositories, surveying sites for historical significance, creating and updating databases of inventories of historic sites, and writing and reviewing nominations proposing designation. Secondary responsibilities may include photographing and other field survey work throughout the City of Philadelphia. Applicants should have strong skills in research and writing. Experience researching and documenting the histories of marginalized and underserved populations is a plus. Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate level program in historic preservation, city planning, architectural history, American history, African American studies, public history, American studies, urban studies, archaeology, museum studies, or related program. Work will be remote and work hours are generally flexible to accommodate academic schedules. Philadelphia residency is not required. Candidates are expected to work 10 to 12 hours per week. Hourly compensation is $14.25.

If you are interested in an internship with the Historical Commission, please email a resume and cover letter to preservation@phila.gov by Monday, January 31st with the subject line "Spring 2022 internship." The same email may be used for any questions or concerns.
